The Finnish Christian Peace Association (Suomen kristillinen rauhanliike) awarded its Peace Prize in 2021 to H.E Ambassador Elayne Whyte Gómezof Costa Rica. Ms. Whytewas the President of the UN conference to negotiate anuclear weaponsban treaty, which entered into force 22 January 2021. In its justification of the award, the Peace Association acknowledges the significance of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) for the global peace and sustainable development, and the leadership and instrumental role that Ambassador Whyte played in the negotiations leading to the TPNW.
Commending Costa Rica’s systematic and central role advancing global initiatives to support peace, such as the process on Human Right to Peace, the Association wants to recognize the value of leadershipAmbassador Whyte provided, of which the whole world should be grateful.
